About Us

Education

The educational mandate of SHALLAWAY is carried out via many inter-connected programs. In addition to formal choral music education of the young people in its six ensembles, SHALLAWAY operates string, flute and percussion programs whose pedagogy is linked with the literacy and musical goals of its choral curriculum. The choir also has a major focus on mentorship as a critical path for the encouragement of its learners and the transmission of the culture. This mentorship takes many conscious forms within the organization:

  • a formal philosophy of peer coaching and encouragement;
  • reflective teaching practice;
  • the advance placement Enrichment Program for junior choristers;
  • para-professional Apprenticeship Programs for senior choristers;
  • the Choral/Instrumental Scholarship Program of mentored leadership for senior university students;
  • a wide network of partnering with community agencies; and,
  • academic research.

With the support of its families, faculty, staff, Board of Directors, sponsors and donors, an army of volunteers and many valued partners, SHALLAWAY is dedicated to continuing its ever-evolving journey of exploring, connecting, encouraging, developing and celebrating cultural expression through the medium of choral music.
