Chorister Councils

The Chorister Councils – the choir’s system of chorister self-governance - is an important part of the SHALLAWAY family. These councils operate at all three levels and are peer chosen, by election. These councils are one of the important strands through which leadership and mentorship are developed within the choir. The councils provide leadership on many fronts – by being model exemplars, by observing and addressing both issues for celebration and reflection as well as care, concern and action.

The councils for Jubilate and Camerata operate independent of faculty and staff, albeit a close relationship and communication exists between them all. In addition to fundraising for special projects they identify (i.e., polio eradication), they also organize social activities and, develop and host spirit-building events.   They are also a vital link to express concerns, ideas or any other issue choristers may have.  If a chorister feels uncomfortable approaching an adult with a concern, he/she may more easily talk to a chorister councilor, who may then relay that concern appropriately.

Chorister Council Responsibilities:

  • Work along with conductors, choral scholars, administration and volunteers to promote unity, socialization and friendships among choristers by encouraging them to make new friends and providing opportunities for them to do so.
  • Take on a leadership role and set a good example for younger choristers regarding behaviour, attitude, musicianship and friendliness.
  • Be alert to any issues or concerns that may arise and need consideration and/or action, communicating to faculty if/where warranted.
  • Be open to new ideas and suggestions from choristers, the director, associate conductor, choral scholars, key volunteers, administration, etc. and find ways to incorporate these suggestions in to real goals and activities for the council.
  • Organize and execute parties and other social activities got choristers throughout the year, i.e. Halloween Party, Christmas Party, end-of-year social, games and activities for choral camps, etc.
  • Planning, coordination and execution of retreat activities and campfire.
  • Coordination of flower/gift/card presentations for conductors, choral scholars, special guests, etc.
  • Provide a way for choristers to voice suggestions/comments, i.e. suggestion box.
  • Run a canteen service, i.e. purchase goodies, administer weekly canteen.
  • Plan activities to be carried out using funds generated by the canteen.
  • Initiate activities to boost spirit and encourage recognition of SHALLAWAY.
