Our Vision

Shallaway Youth Choir is an internationally recognized and celebrated organization that is dedicated to exploring, developing, and celebrating cultural expression through choral music. At Shallaway, we aim to foster independent musicianship and leadership in our choristers to empower the next generation of artistic innovators in Newfoundland and Labrador. Through our commitment to artistic excellence, youth learn the value of independence, discipline, and confidence, while also gaining a sense of pride and identity as Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

Shallaway is about more than beautiful singing. The choir believes in the importance of promoting and preserving our Newfoundland and Labrador culture and traditions by teaching it to our children.

Shallaway is an internationally celebrated choir that not only teaches excellence in music, we help children explore their leadership potential in a supportive, compassionate and caring environment.

Shallaway is a family where we encourage every child to BE who they are in a supportive atmosphere with zero tolerance for bullying.

Shallaway works with choristers and families to ensure that every child’s experience is one of fun, learning, growth, and development, both culturally and musically.

OUR HISTORY

Founded in 1992, Shallaway Youth Choir is a highly-accomplished youth organization that expresses itself through choral music. Over the years, Shallaway has achieved both artistic and cultural acclaim and is now recognized as one of the world’s finest choirs. Not only has Shallaway placed first in several national and international competitions, but has also received numerous invitations to perform around the province, the country, and the world.

Our choir actively seeks out new ways to connect with other cultures in a progressive way.  Steeped in the rich musical traditions of our own province and country, Shallaway has embraced the music of other cultures, with some 41 languages in our current repertoire. We continue to develop a dynamic program of intercultural outreach and exchange which has built cultural bridges throughout Canada, North and South America, Britain, Europe, Scandinavia, and Asia.

THE BENEFITS OF CHORAL MUSIC

There are countless benefits of being involved with a music-oriented youth organization such as Shallaway. At Shallaway, we aim to develop youth by offering a variety of experiences and opportunities. Our programs are designed to support children by:

  • Providing character-building benefits for choristers such as self-discipline, self-confidence, perseverance in pursuit of a positive result, enthusiasm for achieving a common purpose, and respect for others.

  • Encouraging a collaborative environment.

  • Improving participants’ sense of social well-being, and sense of belonging.

  • Fostering ambassadorship skills in the context of representing Newfoundland and Labrador on a provincial, national, and international scale.

  • Fostering an appreciation for cultural diversity by exploring a variety of cultures through song and travel.

  • Gaining experience acting as mentors, and developing leadership skills through peer-to-peer learning.

By cultivating the skills of young Newfoundlanders and Labradorians and instilling high-levels of civic pride, Shallaway is helping to inspire leaders for the future.
